BACKGROUND

Stacking Cat was created for 9 Lives in 2017, a unique design event where 9 designers (lives) express their take on furniture design for cats in urban, compact living spaces. It aims to showcase how good design can improve experiences and cultivate a deeper appreciation for quality design.

STORY

“Inspired by cats from where the designer grew up. 

From kampong life, HDB, hawker center, temples,schools or work place, we can easily spot the cats within short distance”

Cats are the most agile and adaptable animals. Theyare smart and curious. Each of them have their own characters. They like toclimb, wander around and play with discarded card boxes in HDB void decks” 

These lovely animals make me feel delighted and atease.

I thought to design a piece modular cat furniture thathave cheerful and whimsical character to all cat lovers.

Stacking Cat Design

“Stacking Cat” is a modular cat tree designed for small home apartment space. 

It consist of a few modules expanding vertically forcat to move around and to rest inside. The modules are designed for easy setup and easy maintenance allowing user to personalize to their home interior. 

The wood and finishing coats applied are “zero VOC”thus safe for cats. Made from, MDF Forescolor is made from wood fibreimpregnated with organic dyes. They are join together by mild steel structurethat is powdered coated to made the furniture last.. The front and back panel are hold by magnets so that it is user can easily clean and access the internal.

The fund will be used for fabrication for the first batch of  56 sets of  stacking cats ( 1 set consist of4 cat module) in Singapore.

This include manufaturing  for both wood and metal part, hardware joints and magnets, assembly fee and transportation fee.

The material selection on wood is  wood is HDF and premium pine wood.

The main challenge for this project is to get sufficient orders to keep the cost per set low.

It is also challenging to get low fabrication cost locally but at the same time to monitor and keep the design and quality intent.
