A Furniture Design. Made for Cats.

BAST Cat Furniture was created for 9 Lives Design Show in 2017, a unique design event where 9 designers (lives) express their take on furniture design for cats in urban, compact living spaces. It aims to showcase how good design can improve experiences and cultivate a deeper appreciation for quality design.

Our Story

Bast is inspired by the name of ancient Egyptian mythology, of a Goddess that took the form of a cat. It gets along with the culture of the people who worship cats as exalted creature. Integrated into the design is the sacred geometry and colors of black and gold to represent the “old” glory of the cats. However, the compact size is adapted to nowadays living which grow smaller each day to suit everybody’s needs.

As the cat was treated like God, after its death, the cat would be mummified. The wrap itself revealed an interesting pattern & ornament. Thus, creating the geomatric pattern of Rhombus or pyramid, which carefully arranged close to each other as the initial formation. 

Combining those patterns of sacred geometry, we use two of the pyramid models, and face it upside down to reconcile on its sharp edges. This symbolize the two sides of the cat: tame and wild at the same time. 

To strengthen the Egyptian accent, we also add some matching geometric pattern on the pyramid, and the overall color combination of black, natural, and gold color as the accent to create an elegant impression, just like the Egyptian goddess.

We especially design the dimension to suit the everyday's furniture essentials, with the dimension 60 x 60 x 80 cm. We want the furniture itself to blend with the surrounding elements in the urban apartments or house.

Once we successfully reach our goal of SGD 100,000 , we will use the fund for the furniture production on a much larger scale, including the sourcing, assembly, packaging, shipping, distribution, and for the designers and the production team.

We will contribute 5% of each furniture to Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA), a non-profit organisation based in Bali, Indonesia. BAWA works to save, protect and improve the lives of all animals in Bali and beyond.

We need the minmum amount of orders to start our mass furniture production. Although we receive a lot of help from our manufacturing partner to produce our first prototype for the exhibition, the amount that we have to pay upfront for the production is still a challenge for us to fulfill as a small design studio with limited financial resources.
